Lower Back Pain
Back pain affects about 80% of
people who live in the United States, at some point in their lives.
Lower back pain, unfortunately, is one of the most prevalent ailments in our country. What causes lower back pain?
There are several causes that are most common when diagnosing this particular infirmity.
One of the most widespread causes
for this pain is a compressed sciatica nerve, resulting from a herniated disc. The pain radiates from the sacral plexus, down the leg, and to the
toes. Another fairly common cause for pain in the lower back is
osteoarthritis. Other reasons for back pain in the lower region are: muscle strains, sprains, pinched nerves, injuries to the back, fractures of the vertebrae, infections,
poor posture, scoliosis, and bruising. At times, other medical
conditions not related to the spine, can cause pain in the lower back. These include, kidney stones, urinary tract infections, pelvic inflammatory
disease, and pancreatitus. What can be done to relieve the pain associated with these conditions? Thankfully, there are many avenues to back pain
relief.
Although it seems illogical, most
times it is advisable to stay active and not give in to the pain.
Staying in bed may exacerbate the problem. Staying active and
taking over-the counter pain medications, like ibuprofen and NSAIDs, is often the best choice when back pain
begins. Other important ways to diminish pain and stop its
recurrence is to strengthen back and stomach muscles, maintain good posture, lift heavy objects safely, and find
ways to reduce everyday stress. Some patients have found that
placing a pillow between their knees or lying on their backs with a pillow beneath their knees has helped reduce
back pain.
Pain that lasts more than three
months needs to be addressed using different methods. Some of the prescription medicines that might be suggested
by a physician are: Celebrex, muscle relaxants, opioids, and steroids. If the pain is related to herniated discs, occasionally surgery is
required. As alternatives to traditional medical interventions,
some have found that acupuncture and spinal manipulation have eased their lower back pain, although these
methods remain controversial.
How can back pain be avoided before
it even starts. Taking a holistic and proactive position toward
staying healthy is imperative, and will definitely help avoid lower back pain. Exercise, exercise,
exercise. A hearty walk each day is good for the entire
body. Not only is a daily walk a wonderful way to alleviate stress,
but walking helps the body’s core (the trunk, stomach, back) strengthen. Any floor exercise that strengthens the stomach and back muscles will decrease
the likelihood of developing lower back problems.
